Meet Alison & Delia

Sep 26, 2021

The Style That Binds Us was founded by mother-daughter duo, Alison Bruhn & Delia Folk. Alison & Delia both grew up in Birmingham, AL and are now based in Manhattan. They want to take the stress out of getting dressed & make the fashion industry seem more approachable & less overwhelming. Want to get to know the women behind The Style That Binds Us better? Get the scoop below!

Alison’s story:

Did you know there is a science to dressing? Have you heard of “Enclothed Cognition”? The answers to these two questions sum up my career goals. The science to dressing teaches us what the mind of the person speaking to you or meeting you for the first time is thinking about you, before you even speak a word. “Enclothed Cognition” is a term that means what you wear has an effect on your mental process and the way you think, feel and function in areas like attention, confidence and abstract thinking.” Fascinating stuff, right? I believe there is much more to getting dressed than simply putting on clothes each day. You have power you probably aren’t even aware of that can be harnessed by the clothing choices you make. My mission as a personal stylist is to empower women by creating a platform to tell their story- to build a visual representation of who they are; igniting a new path to confidence and independence.

The idea of working with a personal stylist might never have occurred to you before, or maybe you don’t have access to a wardrobe consultant where you are. Perhaps, it’s just not in your budget right now, but you’re feeling overwhelmed as many of my clients are before we meet. The simple act of getting dressed each morning for your day has become difficult and super frustrating, with no one to turn to for advice.

And that’s where I come in.

It’s for those very reasons that I offer in-person and virtual styling sessions along with visual branding workshops.

Does this sound like something you might be interested in? A one-on-one session with a personal stylist in the privacy of your own home? If it does, you can email me at alison@thestylethatbindsus.com to set up a free consultation call to learn more!

Alison is a national style and image consultant with offices in Birmingham, Alabama, and New York, New York, and clients across the country. She studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. Alison works with both private clients and groups. She enjoys public speaking and hosting designer events as well.

Delia’s story:

I had a dream that I wanted to move to New York City & work in the fashion industry. I gave it my all and made it happen. This was no small feat because I barely knew anyone in the industry or understood what a job in fashion would look like. The College of William & Mary (where I went to school) didn’t have many resources to assist with getting into this industry, so I had to pave the way for myself. Can you imagine someone from Birmingham, AL moving to NYC and landing a job at one of the top retailers in the world with little to no ins to the industry? It seems pretty impossible and daunting since there wasn’t a step-by-step guide I could follow. Here is a YouTube video we made reminiscing over my experience getting both my first internship & job in fashion.

After leaving Barneys New York to start my full-time entrepreneurial journey, I knew I had key insights into the life and mind of someone working on the buying team at a retail store that could be really helpful to brands. I also have experience growing a company using innovative & out-of-the-box ideas instead of a large marketing budget. I set brands up for success, by consulting with them to help companies navigate both D2C & wholesale.

Here is a podcast episode where we discuss what it was like working at Barneys & also how Delia works with brands.

Have you ever asked yourself or struggled with:

  • How to create a cohesive brand to stand apart from the rest
  • I want to be sold in retail stores, but where do I begin?
  • How can I get in front of my target market?
  • How can I make my website better and easier to shop?
  • As I create new collections, how do I stay true to the aesthetic I created?
  • Are my products priced correctly?

There is SO MUCH to think about for both wholesale and direct-to-consumer, and it can sometimes be helpful to have an outside, unbiased experienced perspective. Learn more here.
