Tip: Slut Your B(usiness) Card

One of the best pieces of advice I have received has been, “slut your business card”. Once you have a card, give them out to anyone and everyone. Always have them on hand, because you never know who you’ll run into (grocery store, plane, art gallery, etc). When I attend an event, I goal myself to give out at least one card.

This tip has been invaluable to me. While interviewing for my first job in fashion, I created a personal business card. Most people don’t do this, so it’ll make you stand out. It was professional and simple, featuring my name/number/email. During interviews, I would give them my resume and business card. That way, if a position at their company opened, they could rifle through their stack of business cards, and hopefully find mine. I would also hand these out at networking events.

Do you still do this once you have a job??

Yes! When I started my first job, I eagerly applied for my business cards the first day, and accidentally ordered 1,000 instead of 500! Once I received them, I handed them out at each appointment to everyone who attended. I keep a stack with me at all times. When I meet someone and/or receive their business card, I friend them on LinkedIN within 24 hours. Instead of the automatic message, I write a quick note saying, “Enjoyed meeting you tonight”, and add something that pertained to the conversation or situation. That way, they will remember you and are more likely to accept. I also look them up on Instagram, and potentially follow them.

I goal myself to be easily findable online. Sometimes, I have a difficult time locating someone on LinkedIN or Instagram, which can be frustrating. The names they choose aren’t obvious or they may not have a profile. Therefore, I have tried to do the opposite. This is beneficial for companies to find you if they are looking to fill a role, and also for making new connections.
