“My Grandma Rita has her way of making these cookies….and I have mine. I’ve taken her original recipe from my childhood and made a few tweaks. Fun fact, these cookies fit just about every holiday. Make them white and blue for Hanukkah, pink for Valentine’s Day, or red and green for Christmas. A good cookie, is a good cookie no matter the occasion .” – Madison
Ingredients
- 1 Cup (aka 2 sticks of butter) at room temperature
- 1 Cup granulated sugar
- 2 Teaspoons Vanilla (this is where I go a bit rogue from grandma’s OG recipe)
- 1 Large Egg
- 1 Teaspoon cold water
- 3 Cups Flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon fine salt (I like being fancy and using Himalayan pink salt)
Directions
- Preheat your oven to 375
- In a large bowl combine flour, baking powder, and salt
- In a separate bowl or stand mixer, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy
- Add the vanilla, egg, and water and mix until fully combined
- Working quickly, add the flour mixture by the half cup until fully combined—-do not overmix!
- Roll the dough in plastic wrap or other airtight method and store in the refrigerator for an hour
- Once the dough is cooled, you can roll them out and cut them into your favorite shapes with cookie cutters!
- Bake on a greased or non-stick cookie sheet for 6-8 minutes depending on how hot your oven is (always helpful to do a test cookie or two). 8. Once cooled, decorate with icing, sprinkles, and any other festive sweets!
