About Time: Fashion & Duration at The Met is here!

The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibit, About Time: Fashion & Duration, has opened! It was supposed to open on the first Monday in May in tandem with the annual Met Gala, but was pushed back due to COVID. One of the unintended pros of this was that Andrew Bolton, Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute, and team were able to add in some pieces by Black designers. The Met turned 150 this past summer, so the theme for the exhibit explores fashion & the concept of time from 1870-2020. The theme is even more relevant now, because of the extreme change we’ve seen in the concept of time during lockdown.

There are two rooms in the exhibit, both of which are designed as clocks. In the first room, there are 60 looks made up of two pieces paired together: the original piece & a style created later that was created with inspiration from the original. All of the items are black, because this best showcases the silhouettes.

What’s a fashion exhibit without this iconic Versace safety pin dress worn by Elizabeth Hurley?!

The exhibit ends with a stunning piece by Viktor & Rolf to highlight the future of fashion: community, collaboration, and sustainability.

We highly encourage you to visit this exhibit if you are able to! It is up until February 7th, 2021. Learn more about becoming a member at The Met here. Please note The Met’s updated hours when planning your visit.
